Heat water
Bring fresh water to just under boiling (about 195–205°F / 90–96°C). Measure approximately 6 fl oz (about 180 ml) of hot water and set aside.
Pull espresso
Using an espresso machine, grind coffee to a fine setting and tamp evenly. Pull two standard espresso shots (about 2 shots, ~60 ml combined) directly into a pre-warmed cup or small pitcher. If using strong brewed espresso-style coffee or a concentrated stovetop espresso (moka pot), use an equivalent volume and strength.
Combine
Pour the 6 fl oz (180 ml) of hot water into a serving cup. Pour the two shots of espresso over the hot water. Pouring espresso into water (rather than water into espresso) preserves crema better; however either order is acceptable. Stir gently once to combine.
