Method
Preparation
Measure and heat water
Measure 12 fl oz (about 350 ml) filtered water for brewing and an additional 2 fl oz to preheat. Heat water to 200°F (93°C). If you don't have a thermometer, bring water to a gentle boil and let sit 30 seconds.
Preheat equipment
Pour the 2 fl oz of hot water through your coffee maker, French press, pour-over dripper, or carafe to warm it. Discard the rinse water.
Grinding and Dosing
Weigh or measure beans
Measure 0.33 cups (approximately 30 grams) of whole beans for a medium-strength 12 fl oz cup. This is roughly a 1:18 coffee-to-water ratio (30 g coffee to 350 g water). Adjust to taste if you prefer stronger or lighter coffee.
Grind beans
Grind the beans just before brewing. Use a medium-coarse grind for French press, medium for drip or pour-over. Aim for a texture like coarse sand for French press or table salt for pour-over.
Brewing
Brewing in a pour-over (if using)
Place a paper filter in the dripper and rinse it with hot water to remove paper taste and preheat the dripper. Add the ground coffee. Start a 30–45 second bloom: pour about 60–70 g (2.1–2.5 fl oz) hot water evenly over grounds to saturate, then wait. After bloom, pour remaining water slowly in a steady spiral, finishing within 2:30–3:00 minutes total brew time. Remove dripper and serve.
Brewing in a French press (if using)
Add the ground coffee to the warmed press. Pour all the hot water evenly over grounds, stir gently to ensure all grounds are wet, and place the lid with plunger up. Brew for 4 minutes, then press down slowly and serve immediately to avoid over-extraction.
Brewing in automatic drip (if using)
Place filter in machine, add grounds, and pour 12 fl oz of hot water into the reservoir (or let machine draw its water). Start brew cycle and serve when complete.
Brewing with single-serve brewer (if using)
Follow your brewer's instructions using the measured ground coffee and water amounts. Aim for the same coffee-to-water ratio.
Finishing and Serving
Pour the brewed coffee into a warm cup. Taste and add optional milk (about 2 fl oz) and sweetener (about 1 tsp) if desired. Stir gently.
Garnish: sprinkle a pinch (about 1 tsp or less) of ground cinnamon or cocoa on top if desired.
Enjoy immediately for best flavor. Store any leftover brewed coffee in a sealed container in the refrigerator and consume within 24 hours.
