Cocktail

Optional Turmeric Accent (for deeper 'gold' color and warm spice)

Method

Prepare

1

Make Demerara Syrup (if not on hand)

Combine 2 parts demerara sugar and 1 part water in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir until sugar dissolves. Cool and store refrigerated up to 2 weeks.

2

Optional Turmeric Tincture

If using a tincture, combine roughly 1 part ground turmeric to 5 parts neutral vodka in a jar, let steep 24–48 hours, then strain through a fine mesh or coffee filter. Use a very small amount for color and aroma.

Build the Cocktail

3

Add 2 oz bourbon, 0.5 oz gold liqueur (Licor 43 or similar), 0.25 oz demerara syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters into a mixing glass or shaker with plenty of ice.

4

If you want a warmer, deeper golden hue, add a very small amount (about 1/8 tsp) turmeric tincture or a tiny pinch of ground turmeric. Use sparingly — turmeric is potent and can be gritty. Stir carefully to integrate.

5

Stir the mixture briskly with a bar spoon for about 20–30 seconds (until well chilled and slightly diluted). If you prefer a slightly more aerated drink, you can do a brief shake, but stirring preserves clarity.

6

Strain the cocktail over one large ice cube in a chilled old-fashioned glass or into a rocks glass without ice if preferred.

7

Express the oils of one orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down over the glass and giving it a firm fold to spritz the surface. Rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink as garnish.

8

Optional: Gently sprinkle a pinch of edible gold dust or a couple of edible gold flakes on the surface for a luminous 'gold' effect. Do not stir after adding gold flakes so they sit on the surface.
