Prepare glass
If serving straight up (no ice), chill a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes. If serving on the rocks, fill an old-fashioned glass with fresh ice and set aside.
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker add 2 oz Stolichnaya vodka, 0.5 oz freshly squeezed lime juice, and 0.25 oz simple syrup. Add 6 ice cubes to the shaker.
Shake
Secure the shaker and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds, until the outside of the shaker is frosty and well-chilled. This both chills and dilutes the drink to proper balance.
Strain and finish
If serving straight up, double-strain the mixture into the chilled coupe or martini glass. If serving on the rocks, strain over the prepared old-fashioned glass filled with fresh ice. For a longer, slightly effervescent version, top with about 1.5 oz soda water and gently stir once.
Garnish and serve
Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim and/or a cocktail cherry. Serve immediately.
