In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups of red wine, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 cup of water. Stir the mixture over medium heat until the sugar is fully dissolved.

Once the sugar is dissolved, add 1 cinnamon stick, 1 piece of star anise, 1 strip of orange peel, and 4 whole cloves to the saucepan. Stir well.

Simmering the Mixture

Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Allow it to simmer for about 15 minutes to let the flavors meld together. Keep an eye on it to ensure it does not boil.

After 15 minutes, remove the saucepan from heat. Strain the liquid through a fine mesh sieve to remove the spices, and set aside.
