Method

Prepare Espresso

1

Brew

Brew 2 oz (approx. a double shot) of espresso. Use fresh, hot espresso and pour immediately into a metal or heatproof container so it stays warm until you shake. If you don't have an espresso machine, use a very strong brewed coffee concentrated to espresso strength.

2

Allow the espresso to cool for 30–45 seconds at most — it should still be warm but not piping hot when it hits the shaker (this helps create crema without melting all the ice).

Assemble & Shake

3

Measure & Add

Into a Boston shaker or cocktail shaker, add ice (enough to nearly fill the shaker), then pour 2 oz warm espresso, 1 oz Kahlúa, 0.5 oz Amaretto Disaronno, and your chosen 1.5 oz spirit (select Belvedere Vodka, Herradura Reposado Tequila, or Ron Zacapa No. 23 Rum). If you prefer a slightly sweeter cocktail, add 0.25 oz simple syrup.

4

Dry Shake (optional)

For extra froth and crema, do a 10–12 second dry shake first: secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously without ice to emulsify the ingredients and build foam (this is optional but recommended for texture).

5

Wet Shake

Add ice (if you dry-shook) or proceed directly if you already had ice in the shaker. Shake vigorously for 12–18 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold and you see good condensation. Aim for a silky, frothy top.

Strain & Serve

6

Prepare Glass

If desired, chill a coupe or martini glass by filling it with ice or placing it in the freezer a few minutes before serving. Discard ice just before straining.

7

Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or martini glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove tiny ice shards and produce a smooth finish.

8

Garnish with 3 coffee beans on the foam for classic presentation. If using Ron Zacapa or Herradura and you want a complementary aromatic, express an orange twist over the drink and drop it in (optional).

Service & Notes

9

Serve immediately while the crema is still present. The spirit choice will alter character: Vodka keeps it clean and bright, Tequila adds a warm agave/vanilla note, and Zacapa rum adds deep molasses and caramel complexity. Adjust simple syrup to taste if you prefer sweeter.

10

To scale: multiply all ingredient quantities proportionally. For a slightly stronger coffee hit, increase espresso by 0.25–0.5 oz and reduce the spirit slightly to maintain balance.
