Method

Cocktail

1

Build and chill

Add 2 oz Widow Jane bourbon, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz Luxardo maraschino liqueur, 0.25 oz Averna amaro, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters into a mixing glass.

2

Stir

Fill the mixing glass with large, cold ice and stir gently but deliberately for 30–40 seconds (about 20–30 full turns) until the mixture is well chilled, slightly diluted, and slightly viscous on the spoon. The target temperature is just below refrigerator temperature; the spirit should be silky and not icy.

3

Prepare glass

If serving up: chill a coupe or Nick & Nora by filling it with ice water while stirring. If serving on the rocks: place one large clear ice cube in a rocks glass and set aside.

4

Strain

Discard ice water from the chilled glass and double‑strain the stirred cocktail into the chilled coupe (or single strain over the large cube in the rocks glass). Use a julep or fine strainer to remove any small shards of ice.

5

Garnish

Express an orange twist over the surface of the cocktail by holding the twist with the outer peel facing down above the drink and giving it a quick snap to release oils. Run the twist around the rim, then drop it into the drink. Optionally add a Luxardo cherry on a pick if desired.

6

Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the interplay of rich bourbon, sweet vermouth, maraschino perfume, and the bitter herbal note of Averna—hence 'decadence.'

Optional finishing / presentation

7

If you prefer a slightly smokier or deeper presentation, grate a small pinch of dark chocolate (very fine) over the top just before serving, or briefly flame‑caramelize the orange twist with a culinary torch to add a caramelized aroma. These are optional and should be used sparingly to preserve balance.
