1

Chill glass

Place an old-fashioned glass (or rocks glass) in the freezer for a few minutes, or fill it with ice water while you assemble the drink to chill it.

2

Measure ingredients

Using a jigger, measure 2 tablespoons (30 ml) Nonino Amaro, 1½ tablespoons (22.5 ml) rye whiskey, and 1 tablespoon (15 ml) sweet vermouth into a mixing glass or cocktail shaker.

3

Add bitters and ice

Add 2 teaspoons (about 10–12 dashes total) of orange bitters to the mixing glass. Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice to properly chill and slightly dilute the drink.

4

Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture briskly for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full spoon rotations) until the outside of the mixing glass feels very cold and the liquid is slightly diluted and well integrated.

5

Prepare glass

Discard the ice water (if used) from the chilled old-fashioned glass. Add a large ice cube or fresh chilled rocks to the glass.

6

Strain

Strain the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared old-fashioned glass over the large ice cube.

7

Express and garnish

Take an orange peel and hold it over the glass, skin side down. Give it a firm twist to express the oils over the drink, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the cocktail as garnish.

8

Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the interplay of bitter, sweet and herbal citrus notes.
