Cocktail
Prep cardamom and chill glass
Lightly crush the cardamom pod with a muddler or the back of a teaspoon just enough to open the pod and release aromatics. Place the serving glass in the freezer or fill with ice to chill while you prepare the cocktail.
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass or shaker, add the crushed cardamom, Greek yogurt, rose water, demerara syrup, lemon juice, Angostura bitters and orange bitters. Pour in the Canadian rye whisky.
Dry shake
Seal the shaker and shake vigorously without ice for 10–15 seconds. This emulsifies the yogurt with the spirits and creates a creamy texture.
Wet shake
Open the shaker and add 6 ice cubes. Shake again vigorously for 15–20 seconds until the outside of the shaker is well chilled and slightly frosted.
Strain
Discard ice from the chilled serving glass if used. Double strain the cocktail into the chilled old fashioned glass over a single large ice cube or sphere using the shaker pour and a fine strainer to catch cardamom bits and any yogurt solids.
Garnish and finish
Express an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down and giving it a firm twist to release oils, then rub the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the drink. Add a pinch of dried rose petal on top for aroma and visual effect. Optionally add one small dash of rose water on top to lift the aroma (very sparingly).
Serve
Serve immediately. Encourage the drinker to sip slowly so the creamy yogurt texture and aromatic rose and cardamom notes evolve with the rye base.
