Affogato (assembly)

Method

Prepare coffee

1

Brew espresso

Brew two fresh shots (about 60 ml total) of espresso using an espresso machine. Alternatively, brew 60 ml of very strong coffee with a stovetop Moka pot or an Aeropress. The coffee should be hot (near serving temperature).

2

If you prefer a slightly sweeter affogato, stir 1 teaspoon of simple syrup or sugar into the hot espresso until dissolved. If using liqueur, stir it into the espresso now.

Prepare gelato/ice cream and garnishes

3

Scoop two level scoops of vanilla gelato or a high-quality vanilla ice cream into a chilled small glass or dessert bowl. Chilling the serving vessel briefly (5–10 minutes in the freezer) helps the gelato melt more slowly.

4

If using chocolate shavings, nuts, or whipped cream as garnish, have them ready in small bowls for quick assembly.

Assemble and serve

5

Place the bowl or glass with the two scoops of gelato on a small saucer. Pour the hot espresso directly over the gelato evenly. You should hear a gentle sizzle and see the gelato begin to melt and create a creamy coffee pool.

6

Quickly sprinkle the chocolate shavings and toasted chopped nuts over the top if using. Dust lightly with cocoa powder or add a dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence.

7

Serve immediately with a small spoon. Encourage diners to scoop through the melting gelato into the coffee so each bite is a mix of cold, creamy ice cream and hot coffee.
