Cake Layers
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Incorporate Boiling Water
Carefully stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin; this is normal.
Bake the Layers
Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool the Layers
Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Fudge Center
Melt Ingredients
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the cocoa powder, heavy cream, chocolate chips, and butter. Stir constantly until melted and smooth.
Chill the Fudge
Remove from heat and let the fudge cool slightly, then refrigerate until thickened, about 30 minutes.
Frosting
Prepare the Frosting
In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with the heavy cream. Beat until fluffy.
Add Vanilla
Mix in the vanilla extract until well combined.
Assembly
Assemble the Cake
Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread the fudge center evenly over the top. Place the second cake layer on top of the fudge.
Frost the Cake
Spread the frosting evenly over the top and sides of the cake.
Serve
Slice the cake and serve. Enjoy your delicious chocolate layer cake!
