Milk

1

Prepare ingredients

Measure 2 cups of whole milk and place the saucepan on the stove. If using sweetener or flavoring, measure them now (1 tsp sweetener, 1/2 tsp vanilla or cocoa, and a pinch of salt if desired).

2

Heat milk

Pour the measured milk into the small saucepan. Place the saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir gently and continuously with a spoon or whisk to prevent a skin from forming and to avoid scorching on the bottom. Heat until the milk is warm and steamy, about 4–6 minutes — do not let it come to a rolling boil. Small bubbles may form around the edges.

3

Add flavor and sweetener (optional)

When the milk is hot and steaming (but before boiling), remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the measured sweetener and vanilla extract or sifted cocoa powder, plus a pinch of salt if using. Whisk until fully dissolved and evenly incorporated.

4

Serve

Pour the warm milk into a mug or glass. Taste and adjust sweetness or flavoring if desired. Serve immediately. If you prefer chilled milk, allow to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until cold and serve over ice.

Equipment

5

Use the measuring cup to measure the milk and optional ingredients. Heat milk in the saucepan while stirring with the spoon or whisk. Pour into the mug or glass for serving.
