Method
Cocktail
Prepare butterfly pea–infused gin (advance)
If you don't have pre-infused gin, combine 1 cup gin with 1 tablespoon dried butterfly pea flowers (or 1 teaspoon butterfly pea powder) in a clean jar. Let steep at room temperature for 30–60 minutes until desired color is reached, then strain through a fine mesh and store. Use chilled.
Muddle basil
In a cocktail shaker, place 6 fresh basil leaves and 0.25 oz simple syrup. Gently muddle 6–8 times to release the basil oils. Do not over-muddle — you want aromatic release without bitter chlorophyll.
Wet shake
Add ice (about 4 oz) to the shaker and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds until the shaker is cold to the touch and the mixture is well chilled and aerated.
Double strain and adjust
Double-strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass using both the shaker strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove basil bits and any solids. Taste and, if desired, add up to 0.25 oz more simple syrup for sweetness or another 0.25 oz lemon juice for brightness; gently stir once to integrate.
Garnish & Serve
Gently slap a basil sprig between your hands to activate the aroma and place it on top of the cocktail as a garnish.
Serve immediately. The butterfly pea infusion will give a deep indigo/violet base; crème de violette and lemon can shift the hue to a delicate purple — watch the color change as you sip.
