Build the cocktail
Fill an old-fashioned (rocks) glass about three-quarters full with ice cubes.
Pour 1 oz Campari over the ice directly into the glass.
Add 1 oz sweet vermouth to the glass.
Gently stir the Campari and vermouth with a bar spoon for about 10–15 seconds to chill and combine.
Top with about 2 oz (approximately a splash to a quarter of the glass) of chilled club soda or sparkling water. Pour slowly to preserve carbonation.
Garnish and serve
Give the drink one gentle stir to integrate the soda without flattening it. Garnish with an orange slice or a twist of orange peel. Serve immediately.
