Preparation
Measure and pour
Add 2 oz mezcal, 1 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz agave syrup, and, if using, 0.25 oz orange liqueur into a cocktail shaker.
Add ice and shake
Fill the shaker with ice so the liquid is well chilled (about 1 cup of ice). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker feels cold and frosty.
Strain
If serving on the rocks: add fresh ice to your prepared glass and strain the cocktail into the glass using the shaker's built-in strainer or a fine strainer for a cleaner pour. If serving up: double-strain into the chilled coupe to remove small ice chips and froth.
Garnish and serve
Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim. Serve immediately and enjoy. Taste and, if desired, add a few drops more agave syrup to sweeten.
Notes
Adjust agave to taste. Mezcal can be smokier than tequila; choose a joven mezcal for balance. The splash of orange liqueur is optional but adds bright, rounded citrus complexity similar to a traditional margarita.
