Preparation
Chill cups
Place serving cups or bowls in the freezer for 10–15 minutes before plating to keep gelato from melting too quickly while assembling.
If sauces are refrigerated, warm briefly to a pourable consistency: microwave in 10–15 second bursts, stirring between bursts, or place in a small saucepan over low heat until just pourable. Do not overheat.
Assembling Gelato Cups
Portion gelato
Working quickly, use the ice cream scoop to portion 1/2 cup (about one generous scoop) of each chosen flavor per cup. For a single-flavor cup, add two generous scoops (about 1 cup total). Arrange scoops neatly in each chilled cup.
Add sauces
Spoon 1–2 tablespoons of hot fudge or chocolate sauce and/or 1–2 tablespoons of caramel sauce over the scoops in each cup. Use more or less to taste.
Add mix-ins
Sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of crushed toasted nuts and 1 teaspoon of sprinkles or chopped chocolate over each cup for texture and visual appeal.
Top and garnish
Add a dollop (about 1–2 tablespoons) of whipped cream to each cup if desired. Place half a maraschino cherry or 1–2 fresh berries on top of the whipped cream. Insert a wafer cookie or small biscotti at an angle and finish with a small mint leaf for color.
Serve immediately with spoons. If not serving right away, keep assembled cups in the freezer for up to 30 minutes; prolonged storage will harden the gelato and compress the texture.
Serving Suggestions & Notes
Offer guests the available flavors and suggested pairings (vanilla with hot fudge and hazelnuts, pistachio with chocolate and chopped pistachios, chocolate with caramel and biscotti). Adjust sauce and mix-in amounts to taste.
To make a composed trio, serve three different 1/2-cup scoops in a larger bowl and finish with sauces and garnishes as above.
