Fresh Orange Juice (yields about 1 liter)
Bottling & Finishing
Method
Fresh Orange Juice (yields about 1 liter)
Prepare and juice the oranges
Wash all oranges thoroughly under running water. Roll each orange firmly on the countertop with the palm of your hand to loosen juices. Cut oranges in half crosswise and juice using a manual citrus juicer or an electric citrus press. Collect the juice into a large bowl or pitcher. Expect about 3/4 to 1 cup of juice per medium orange; 12 oranges should yield roughly 8–10 cups (about 1–1.25 liters) of juice.
Strain for clarity (optional)
If you prefer smoother bottled juice, pour the freshly squeezed juice through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean container to remove pulp and seeds. Use the back of a spoon to press solids gently to extract maximum liquid. Discard solids.
Adjust sweetness and flavor
Taste the strained juice. If it tastes too intense, stir in up to 1/2 cup (0.5 cups) filtered water a little at a time until you reach desired strength. If you want it sweeter, dissolve up to 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (or add 2 tablespoons simple syrup) into 1/4 cup of warm juice, then mix back into the full batch. Add 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice if you want brighter acidity. Stir thoroughly to combine.

Sterilize and bottle
If your bottles or jars are not pre-sterilized, wash them in hot soapy water and rinse well. To sterilize, submerge glass bottles and lids in boiling water for 5 minutes, then remove with tongs and place on a clean towel. While bottles are still warm, pour the prepared juice into the bottle(s), leaving about 1/2 inch (1 cm) headspace. Seal immediately with the lid.
Chill and serve
Allow the bottled juice to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving. Serve over ice if desired. Homemade fresh-squeezed orange juice is best consumed within 48–72 hours when kept refrigerated; shake gently before serving as natural separation may occur.
Notes on shelf life and safety
This recipe is for fresh, refrigerated bottled juice, not for long-term shelf-stable canning. For longer storage, consider pasteurizing the juice (heat to 71.7°C / 161°F for 15 seconds or follow a tested pasteurization method) and process in a water-bath or follow safe commercial canning guidelines. Always refrigerate after opening.
