Method

Preparing the Meat

1

Cooking Carnitas

In a large pot, cook the pork shoulder on medium heat with seasonings of your choice (salt, pepper, cumin) for about 2-3 hours until tender. Shred the meat using two forks.

2

Preparing Chicken Milanesa

Pound the chicken breasts to an even thickness. Dredge in flour, dip in beaten egg, and coat with breadcrumbs. Fry in hot oil until golden brown on both sides (about 3-4 minutes per side). Slice into strips.

Assembling the Torta

3

Spread Refried Beans

Take a tortilla and spread a generous layer of refried beans on one side.

4

Add Meat

Place a portion of either the shredded carnitas or sliced chicken on top of the beans.

5

Layer the Toppings

Slice the avocado and layer it on the meat. Crumble queso fresco over the top, followed by shredded lettuce, thinly sliced onion, and diced tomato.

6

Finish with Sauces

Add a dollop of sour cream and jalapeños according to your taste.

7

Top with Another Tortilla

Place another tortilla on top and press down gently. Optionally, you can grill the torta on a skillet for a minute on each side for a toasty finish.
