Blueberry‑Basil Syrup

Method

Blueberry‑Basil Syrup

1

Prepare ingredients

Rinse blueberries and basil. Remove basil stems and measure sugar, water, and lemon juice.

2

Combine blueberries, sugar, and water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir to combine and bring to a gentle simmer.

3

Simmer for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the blueberries have burst and the mixture is syrupy.

4

Remove from heat and stir in the fresh basil leaves. Allow the basil to steep in the hot syrup for 5 minutes so its aroma infuses the syrup.

5

After steeping, add the lemon juice. Strain the syrup through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl, pressing on solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard solids.

6

Let the syrup cool to room temperature. Transfer to a clean jar and refrigerate if not using immediately. Yields about 3–4 ounces of syrup (adjust quantity in recipe if you want extra).

Assembly — Little Emperor Cocktail (Non‑alcoholic / Mocktail)

7

Fill a tall glass (12–14 oz) or cocktail glass with ice cubes (about 1 cup).

8

Pour in 3 oz of yuzu juice over the ice.

9

Add 1.5 oz of the cooled blueberry‑basil syrup. If you prefer it sweeter, add up to 0.5 oz more syrup.

10

Top gently with 6 oz chilled ginger ale. Pour slowly down the side of the glass to retain carbonation and create a layered look.

11

Gently stir once or twice with a bar spoon to integrate flavors while keeping bubbles.

12

Garnish with a sprig of fresh basil, 3–4 fresh blueberries, and a lemon wheel or twist on the rim.

13

Serve immediately with a straw or stirrer.
