Donut Dough

Method

Making the Donut Dough

1

Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, warm the milk to about 110°F (43°C). Sprinkle the yeast and a teaspoon of sugar over the milk. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

2

Mix the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and nutmeg. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until a dough forms.

3

Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

4

Shape the Donuts

After the dough has risen, roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick. Use a donut cutter to cut out donut shapes. Place them on a floured baking sheet and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

Frying and Glazing

5

Fry the Donuts

Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 365°F (185°C). Carefully drop in the donuts, a few at a time, and fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.

6

Prepare the Glaze

In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.

7

Glaze the Donuts

Dip the warm donuts into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off. Place on a wire rack to set.
