Coffee base

Equipment (optional)

Method

Coffee base

1

Brew and sweeten

Brew 1 cup of strong hot coffee (preferably freshly brewed). Pour the hot coffee into a pre-warmed heatproof glass or mug. Stir in 1 teaspoon granulated sugar until fully dissolved.

Liqueur & spirit

2

Add liqueur

Pour 1 oz coffee liqueur into the sweetened hot coffee. If using, add 1/2 oz dark rum or brandy for extra warmth and complexity. Stir gently to combine.

Cream & garnish

3

Top with cream

Lightly whip or gently shake 2 tablespoons heavy cream until it thickens slightly but still pours. Slowly pour the cream over the back of a spoon so it floats on top of the coffee, creating a layered effect.

4

Garnish and serve

Dust the cream with 1 teaspoon cocoa powder or grated chocolate. If desired, grate a little orange zest over the top for a bright aromatic note. Serve immediately while hot.
