Coffee & Liquor

1 cup freshly brewed strong hot coffee1 1/2 oz Tia Maria (coffee liqueur)1/2 oz dark rum (optional)

Sweetener & Cream

1/2 tsp simple syrup (1:1 sugar to water) or brown sugar syrup2 tbsp heavy cream, lightly whipped (or double cream)2 tbsp whipped cream (optional garnish)

Garnish

1 pinch freshly grated nutmeg or cocoa powder3 to taste coffee beans (for garnish)

Method

Prepare Coffee & Liquor

Brew coffee

Brew 1 cup of strong hot coffee (use fresh espresso or strongly brewed filter coffee). Pour the hot coffee into a warmed heatproof glass or mug to keep the drink hot.

Combine liqueurs

Add 1.5 oz Tia Maria and 0.5 oz dark rum (if using) to the hot coffee. Stir gently to combine.

Sweeten & Finish

Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of simple syrup or brown sugar syrup to taste. Taste and adjust sweetness as desired.

Prepare cream float

Lightly whip 2 tablespoons of heavy cream so it is slightly thickened but still pourable. Spoon or gently pour the cream over the back of a spoon so it floats on top of the coffee mixture, creating a layered effect.

Optional: Add 2 tablespoons of whipped cream on top if you prefer a richer top layer.

Garnish with a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg or a dusting of cocoa powder and 2–3 coffee beans.

Serve

Serve immediately while hot. Stir the cream into the coffee as you drink or sip through the cream layer for a traditional presentation.
