1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice and water while you prepare the cocktail to chill the glass.

2

Build and mix

In a cocktail shaker, add the cognac, Grand Marnier, freshly squeezed orange juice, and simple syrup (if using). Add the ice cubes. Secure the shaker and shake vigorously for about 10–15 seconds until well chilled (the shaker should frost on the outside).

3

Strain

Discard ice/water from the chilled glass if you used it. Double strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or rocks glass using a cocktail strainer and, if available, a fine mesh strainer to catch any small ice shards or pulp.

4

Garnish and serve

Express the orange peel over the surface of the cocktail by holding it skin-side down and giving it a quick twist to release essential oils, then run the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink as a garnish. Serve immediately.
