Coffee Preparation

Method

Coffee Preparation

1

Measure beans and water

Weigh 10 g (about 0.35 oz or roughly 1 level tablespoon) of whole coffee beans for a single 40 ml (about 1.35 fl oz) shot-style or concentrated cup. This recipe uses a coffee-to-water ratio of about 1:4 (concentrated). For a milder drip-style coffee, use 10 g beans with 160 ml water (1:16 ratio). Adjust quantities proportionally for more servings.

2

Grind the beans

Grind the beans immediately before brewing. For espresso or concentrated shots use a fine grind. For pour-over use medium-fine, for drip medium, for French press coarse. Grind to a consistency appropriate for your brewing method (fine for espresso, medium for pour-over, coarse for French press).

3

Heat water

Heat filtered water to the appropriate temperature: 90–96°C (194–205°F) for most methods. For pour-over and drip aim for 92–96°C; for French press slightly cooler around 90–93°C. If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let sit 30 seconds.

4

Pre-wet/filter and bloom (for pour-over or drip)

If using pour-over or drip, place filter in dripper and rinse with hot water to remove paper taste and preheat the equipment. Discard rinse water. Place ground coffee in filter and gently shake to level. Pour just enough hot water (about twice the weight of coffee) to saturate grounds and let bloom for 30–45 seconds to release CO2.

5

Brew

Brew according to method: - Pour-over: Continue pouring water slowly in concentric circles until reaching the target water weight (e.g., 160 ml for 1:16). Total brew time ~2:30–3:30 minutes. - Drip: Start machine and let brew cycle complete (~3–5 minutes). - French press: Add hot water to grounds, stir gently, place lid, brew 4 minutes, then press slowly. - Espresso: Pull a shot with ~25–30 seconds extraction for 30–40 ml; adjust dose and grind as needed. For concentrated coffee (as recipe base) use the 1:4 ratio and short extraction for a stronger flavor.

6

Serve

Immediately pour brewed coffee into a warmed mug. Taste and adjust. Add milk/cream (about 7 ml or to taste) and sugar (1 tsp or to taste) if desired. A pinch of salt can enhance flavor—stir to combine.

7

Cleanup

Discard used grounds and rinse equipment. If using a paper filter, compost the grounds if possible. Rinse the brewer and mug.

Equipment & Extras

8

Use the grinder to grind beans just before brewing. Use a scale or measuring spoon to ensure accurate coffee-to-water ratio. Use the kettle to heat water to the correct temperature and the chosen brewing device to make coffee as described. Serve in the mug and enjoy.
