Method

Rim (optional)

1

Prepare the sugar rim

Place granulated sugar on a small plate. If using lemon zest, mix zest into the sugar and rub to lightly perfume. Run a lemon wedge around the rim of a chilled coupe or martini glass to moisten, then dip the rim into the sugar, twisting to coat evenly. Set the glass aside to let the rim set while you mix the cocktail.

Cocktail

2

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice (about 1 cup).

3

Add 2 oz vodka, 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.75 oz simple syrup and 0.25 oz triple sec to the shaker.

4

Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold and well chilled. Vigorous shaking chills and dilutes the drink to the proper balance.

5

Strain the cocktail through a fine mesh strainer (or the shaker strainer) into the prepared chilled coupe or martini glass to remove small ice shards and ensure a silky texture.

6

Express a lemon twist over the drink to release essential oils, then drop it in (or hang on the rim). Alternatively, garnish with a small lemon wedge. Serve immediately.
