Method
Cocktail
Chill glass
Place a coupe or old-fashioned glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass, add 2 oz blended whiskey, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 0.5 oz amaro, 0.25 oz orange liqueur, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.
Add ice and stir
Fill the mixing glass with large ice (or regular ice) and stir gently for 30–45 seconds until well-chilled and slightly diluted (mixture should be cold to the touch and slightly viscous).
Prepare glass
Discard ice or water from the chilled serving glass. If using, place a single large ice cube into an old-fashioned glass; for a coupe, leave it empty.
Strain and garnish
Double-strain the mixed cocktail into the prepared glass (over the large ice cube if using an old-fashioned). Express an orange twist over the surface to release oils, run the twist around the rim, and drop it into the drink. Optionally add a Luxardo cherry.
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the balance of whiskey, fortified wine, and bitters with a hint of citrus and amaro complexity.
Optional
For a slightly sweeter, more aromatic version, substitute 0.5 oz of the blended whiskey with an additional 0.5 oz sweet vermouth and reduce the amaro to 0.25 oz. Adjust bitters to taste.
