Classic Standard Cocktail
Build & Serve
Method
Classic Standard Cocktail
Prepare equipment: Chill your serving glass by filling it with ice and water while you mix, or place it in the freezer for a few minutes.
Add bourbon, sweet vermouth and bitters to a mixing glass filled halfway with ice (use large cubes if available).
Discard the ice and water from the chilled serving glass. Place one large clear ice cube or fresh ice into the serving glass if serving 'on the rocks', or leave empty for up to a short coupe serve.
Strain the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the serving glass using a strainer.
Garnish and finish
Express the oils from an orange peel by holding the peel about 3–4 inches above the drink, skin-side down, and giving it a firm twist to release the oils over the surface. Run the peel around the rim of the glass and drop it into the drink.
Clean-up & Notes
Wipe and rinse your mixing tools and glassware. Leftover bitters or vermouth should be sealed and refrigerated to preserve flavor.
Variations: Substitute rye for bourbon for a spicier profile; adjust vermouth between 0.5–1.25 oz for drier or sweeter balance; add a cherry garnish if desired.
