Method

Prep

1

Prepare glass

Pour Tajín and coarse salt onto a small plate and mix. Run a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks glass or coupe, then dip the rim into the Tajín-salt mixture to evenly coat. Set glass in the freezer or aside with a large ice cube ready.

2

Juice citrus

If using fresh blood orange, juice and strain to remove pulp. Measure 1 oz blood orange juice and 0.5 oz fresh lime juice and keep chilled.

Mixing

3

Build and shake

In a cocktail shaker add: 1.5 oz blanco tequila, 0.5 oz mezcal, 1.0 oz blood orange juice, 0.5 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz agave syrup, and 2 dashes fire tincture. Fill the shaker with ice, cap, and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well chilled (shaker should frost).

4

Double strain

Double-strain the shaken cocktail into the prepared chilled glass over one large ice cube (or without ice if using a coupe).

Finish

5

Top and garnish

Gently top the cocktail with 2 oz chilled grapefruit soda by pouring slowly over the back of a spoon to preserve a light effervescence. Express a blood orange wheel over the drink to release oils, then drop it in or hang it on the rim. Optionally add an extra light pinch of Tajín on top of the foam.

6

Serve immediately with a straw or without, noting the Tajín rim provides a spicy-citrus counterpoint to the smoky mezcal and bright blood orange.
