Hush Puppies

Honey Butter

Method

Hush Puppies

1

Prepare the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Mix well until all dry ingredients are incorporated.

2

Add Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and the egg. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and stir until just combined. Fold in the finely chopped onion.

3

Heat Oil

In a deep pot or fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of the batter into it; if it sizzles and rises, it's ready.

4

Fry the Hush Puppies

Using a spoon or a small scoop, drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally.

5

Drain

Remove the hush puppies with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.

Honey Butter

6

Mix Ingredients

In a small bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter, honey, and a pinch of salt. Mix well until smooth and creamy.

7

Serve

Serve the hush puppies warm with a generous dollop of honey butter on the side.
