Cocktail

Basil Syrup (makes ~3/4 cup)

Method

Basil Syrup

1

Make basil syrup

Combine 3 tablespoons sugar and 3 tablespoons water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium, stirring until sugar dissolves and mixture just comes to a simmer (about 2–3 minutes). Remove from heat, add the packed basil leaves, and gently bruise them with a spoon to release oils. Let steep for 15 minutes off the heat.

2

After steeping, taste for intensity — if more basil flavor is desired, steep up to 25 minutes total. Strain the syrup through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean container, pressing gently on leaves to extract liquid. Cool to room temperature. This yields approximately 3/4 cup (enough for several cocktails). Refrigerate up to 1 week.

3

Prepare glass (optional salted rim)

If you want a salted or chili-salt rim, run a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks or coupe glass and dip into salt or chili-salt (about 1 tsp) laid on a plate. Set glass aside.

4

Muddle fresno

Slice 1 Fresno chili thinly (reserve one thin slice for garnish). In a cocktail shaker, add the sliced Fresno (about 4–6 thin slices) and 0.25 oz of the basil syrup (use 1/4 oz worth of the syrup) and gently muddle 6–8 times—just enough to release heat and bright pepper flavor without pulverizing seeds. If you prefer much less heat, remove seeds before muddling or use fewer slices.

5

Build and shake

Add 2 oz Corazón Reposado tequila, 0.75 oz triple sec, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, and the remaining 0.5 oz basil syrup (so total basil syrup used ~0.75 oz) into the shaker with the muddled Fresno. Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup) and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well chilled (shake until the shaker frosts).

6

Double strain and serve

Double strain the cocktail into the prepared glass over fresh ice (if using a rocks glass) or neat into a chilled coupe using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine-mesh sieve to remove small bits of pepper and basil. This yields a smooth drink with clean texture.

7

Garnish and finish

Garnish with 2 fresh basil leaves and the reserved thin Fresno slice or half wheel on the rim. Optionally express a basil leaf over the drink before dropping it in to release aromatics. Serve immediately.

8

Notes on heat: adjust Fresno quantity or remove seeds to control spiciness. If you prefer a sweeter cocktail, increase basil syrup by 0.25–0.5 oz; for drier, reduce syrup by 0.25 oz.
