Method
Cocktail
Chill a rocks glass by filling with ice and a little water; set aside.
In a mixing glass or shaker filled with plenty of ice, combine Myers's Dark Rum (1.5 oz), Amaro Montenegro (0.75 oz), sweet vermouth (0.75 oz), simple syrup (0.25 oz), grapefruit-lime juice (0.5 oz), and grapefruit-lime bitters (2 dashes).
Stir the mixture vigorously with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and properly diluted (about 20% dilution). If you prefer a slightly brighter finish, give 10–12 additional gentle turns.
Dump the ice and water from the chilled rocks glass. Place one large ice cube (or fresh ice) into the glass.
Strain the mixed cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube using a julep or hawthorne strainer to catch shards.
Garnish & Finish
Express the oils of a grapefruit twist over the surface of the drink by holding the twist over the glass and giving it a quick pinch so oils spray onto the cocktail.
Rub the twist around the rim if desired, then drop the twist into the drink as garnish.
Serve immediately. Optionally provide a short stirrer so the drinker can re-integrate aromatics as the ice melts.
