Preparation
Peel and Chop Potatoes
Peel the Russet potatoes and cut them into roughly equal-sized chunks (about 1-2 inches). This helps them cook evenly.
Boil Potatoes
Place the chopped potatoes in a large pot and add enough water to cover them by about an inch. Add 1 tablespoon of salt to the water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium and let simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.
Mashing and Mixing
Drain Potatoes
Once the potatoes are tender, drain them thoroughly in a colander. Allow them to sit for a minute to let any excess steam escape.
Add Butter and Dairy
Return the drained potatoes to the pot. Add 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter, 1 cup of whole milk, and 0.5 cups of heavy cream to the pot with the potatoes.
Mash the Potatoes
Using a potato masher or a hand mixer, mash the potatoes until they reach your desired level of creaminess. If you prefer a smoother texture, use a hand mixer.
Serving
Serve Warm
Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl. You can top them with additional butter or chives if desired. Serve warm.
