Method
Cake Preparation
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Combine Mixtures
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth (the batter will be thin).
Bake the Cake
Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cool the Cakes
Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
Whipped Cream Preparation
Prepare the Whipped Cream
In a mixing bowl, add the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract.
Whip the Cream
Using an electric mixer, whip the cream on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form.
Assembly
Assemble the Cake
Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of whipped cream on top. Place the second cake layer on top and cover the entire cake with the remaining whipped cream.
Serve
Slice the Gâteau au Chocolat and serve immediately, or refrigerate until ready to serve.
