Cocktail

Five-Spice Simple Syrup (makes ~6 oz)

Method

Five-Spice Simple Syrup

1

Make syrup

Combine the sugar, water, and Chinese five-spice powder in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar dissolves and mixture comes to a gentle simmer, about 2–3 minutes. Remove from heat and let steep for 10 minutes so the five-spice infuses fully. Strain through a fine mesh sieve or coffee filter into a small jar, pressing on solids to extract flavor. Cool to room temperature before using. Yields about 6 tablespoons (3/8 cup). Store refrigerated up to 2 weeks.

Cocktail Assembly

2

Prepare glass

Chill an old-fashioned (rocks) glass by filling it with ice and setting it aside while you mix the drink.

3

Mix

In a mixing glass or shaker filled with plenty of ice, combine 1.25 oz rye whiskey, 1.25 oz cognac, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz Bénédictine, 0.25 oz five-spice simple syrup, 2 dashes Peychaud's bitters and 2 dashes Angostura bitters. Stir gently but thoroughly for about 30–45 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted.

4

Finish

Discard the ice from the chilled rocks glass and place a large ice cube in the glass. Strain the mixed cocktail over the ice cube. Express a lemon twist over the drink to release oils, run the twist around the glass rim and drop it in as garnish.

5

Serve immediately and enjoy. The five-spice syrup adds a warm, aromatic note that complements the herbal Bénédictine and classic Vieux Carré profile.
