1

Muddle fruit and mint

In a sturdy mixing glass or cocktail shaker, add the fresh fruit pieces and 6 of the mint leaves (reserve 2 leaves for garnish). Gently muddle only 6–8 times — press to release juices and oils without pulverizing the mint into bits. The goal is fragrant juice, not a green paste.

2

Add spirits and citrus

Pour in the bourbon or rye, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup. Add a small handful of cracked or crushed ice to help chill and dilute as you shake.

3

Shake briskly

Cap the shaker (or cover the mixing glass) and shake vigorously for about 10–12 seconds until well chilled and you see condensation on the outside of the shaker.

4

Prepare serving glass

Fill a rocks glass or short Collins-style glass with crushed ice (leave room to mound the ice slightly). If you like, run a lemon wedge around the rim before filling.

5

Strain and serve

Double-strain the shaken mixture into the prepared glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove fruit solids and mint bits. Pile additional crushed ice on top to create a mound.

6

Optional top and garnish

If desired, top the drink with about 1 oz of soda water for a lighter finish. Slap the reserved mint leaves between your palms to bruise and release aroma, then place the sprig on top along with the lemon wheel or wedge. Insert a short straw and serve immediately.

7

Enjoy: Sip through the aromatic mint with bright citrus and fruit-forward whiskey — the classic smash experience.
