Method
Preparation
Add ingredients to mixing glass
Into a mixing glass add 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz dry or Amontillado sherry, 0.25 oz orange liqueur, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, and 1 dash orange bitters.
Prepare glass
If you chilled the serving glass with ice water, discard the ice water and dry the glass. If it was in the freezer, remove it just before straining.
Strain
Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass using a julep strainer and a fine mesh strainer (or just the julep strainer) to catch any small shards of ice.
Garnish and serve
Express the oils of an orange twist over the surface by holding the twist over the drink and giving it a quick pinch so the oils spray across the cocktail. Rub the rim with the twist if desired, then drop the twist into the drink as garnish. Serve immediately.
Notes
Adjust the sherry amount to taste: increase to 0.5 oz for a nuttier, richer profile or reduce to 0.1–0.2 oz for a lighter floral lift. Use a good-quality sweet vermouth and fresh bitters for best results.
