Chill glass
Place a rocks glass in the freezer for a few minutes or add a large ice cube to chill while you build the drink.
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass, pour 2 oz blended Scotch (or bourbon), 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.5 oz Amaro, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 1 dash orange bitters, and 0.25 oz simple syrup if you prefer slightly sweeter balance.
Stir with ice
Add a handful of ice to the mixing glass and stir briskly but smoothly for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full strokes) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted — this integrates the spirits and softens the alcohol edge.
Prepare serving glass
Discard chilling ice from the rocks glass if you used it, then place one or two large fresh ice cubes into the glass.
Strain
Strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube(s) using a julep or hawthorne strainer for a clear, silky presentation.
Express and garnish
Take the orange peel, give it a firm twist over the surface of the drink to express the oils, then run the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass as garnish.
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy the layered tobacco, citrus, sweet-wine and bitter-herbal notes.
