Chill glass
Place a coupe or chilled old-fashioned glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice and water while you prepare the drink to ensure the final cocktail is cold.
Add 2 oz Maker's Mark Bourbon to a mixing glass or pint glass.
Measure and add 1 oz sweet vermouth to the mixing glass.
Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters to the mixing glass.
Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes (about 6 cubes or enough to come near the top). Large ice chills with less dilution.
Discard the ice/water from the chilled serving glass if you used it to chill. Strain the stirred cocktail through a julep or hawthorne strainer into the chilled coupe or old-fashioned glass.
Garnish with 1 maraschino cherry by dropping it into the drink. If you prefer an aromatic twist, express an orange peel: hold the peel over the drink and give it a quick twist to release oils, then rub the peel rim on the glass and drop it in or discard, per preference.
Serve immediately.
