Method
Meatballs
Prepare the Meatball Mixture
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, minced garlic, egg, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
Form the Meatballs
Using your hands, shape the mixture into meatballs about 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake the Meatballs
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the meatballs for 20-25 minutes or until they are cooked through and browned.
Marinara Sauce
Sauté the Vegetables
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
Add Tomatoes and Season
Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, and add chopped fresh basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir to combine.
Simmer the Sauce
Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer for 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
Combine and Serve
Combine Meatballs and Sauce
Once the meatballs are done baking, add them to the marinara sauce and let them simmer together for an additional 5 minutes.
Serve the Dish
Serve the meatballs in marinara sauce, garnished with additional grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves, to taste.
