Prepare the glass
Chill a rocks glass by placing it in the freezer for a few minutes or filling it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.
Muddle sugar (if using sugar cube)
If using a sugar cube: place the sugar cube in a mixing glass or small mixing bowl, add the Angostura bitters (2 dashes) and one dash of orange bitters, then muddle until the sugar is mostly dissolved. If using simple syrup, skip this step and add the syrup later with the spirits.
Build the cocktail
In a mixing glass filled with ice, combine the d'USSÉ VSOP (2 oz), sweet vermouth (1 oz), the muddled sugar (or 1/4 tsp simple syrup) and the remaining bitters. Stir gently for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.
Prepare the serve
Discard ice or water from the chilled rocks glass. Place a large ice cube in the glass.
Strain and garnish
Strain the stirred mixture into the chilled rocks glass over the large ice cube. Express an orange twist over the drink to release oils, run the twist around the rim of the glass, then drop it into the cocktail as garnish.
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy the interplay of d'USSÉ's rich Cognac character with sweet vermouth and bitters.
