Prepare the Syrup

In a medium saucepan, combine the water and granulated sugar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar is fully dissolved.

Add Basil

Once the sugar has dissolved, add the fresh basil leaves to the saucepan. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and let it simmer for about 5 minutes.

Cool and Strain

Remove the saucepan from heat and let the syrup cool to room temperature. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a clean jar or bottle, discarding the basil leaves. Refrigerate until ready to use.

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.

Combine Ingredients

Pour the vodka, fresh lime juice, and basil simple syrup into the shaker with ice.

Secure the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds to chill the mixture.

Strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a basil leaf or a lime wheel if desired.
