Method

Bagel Preparation

1

Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

2

Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.

3

Knead the Dough

Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

4

First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

5

Shape the Bagels

Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then use your finger to poke a hole in the center and stretch it to form a bagel shape.

6

Second Rise

Place the shaped bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover with a towel, and let rise for another 30 minutes.

7

Boil the Bagels

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda. Boil each bagel for 1-2 minutes on each side, then return to the baking sheet.

8

Add Toppings

After boiling, sprinkle poppy seeds or sesame seeds on top of each bagel while they are still wet.

9

Bake the Bagels

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Cream Cheese Preparation

10

Prepare Cream Cheese

In a mixing bowl, soften the cream cheese at room temperature. If desired, mix in chives and garlic powder for flavor.
