Method
Making the Dough
Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt.
Combine Ingredients
Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add it to the flour mixture along with the olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Let the Dough Rise
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
Assembling the Pizza
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) with a pizza stone inside, if you have one.
Shape the Dough
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into two equal portions. Roll out each portion into a 12-inch circle on a floured surface.
Add Sauce and Cheese
Spread half of the tomato sauce evenly over each pizza base, leaving a small border around the edges. Sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese.
Add Toppings
Evenly distribute the pepperoni slices over the cheese. Sprinkle with oregano and red pepper flakes to taste.
Bake the Pizza
Carefully transfer the pizza onto the preheated pizza stone or a baking sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.
Garnish and Serve
Remove the pizza from the oven, add fresh basil leaves on top, slice, and serve hot.
