Method
Preparation of Marinara Sauce
Add Tomatoes and Seasoning
Pour in the crushed tomatoes, followed by oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
Simmer the Sauce
Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. If desired, add chopped fresh basil just before serving.
Preparation of Fried Calamari
Prepare the Calamari
In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Mix well.
Coat the Calamari
Dredge the calamari rings in the flour mixture, ensuring they are evenly coated. Shake off any excess flour.
Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).
Fry the Calamari
Working in batches, carefully add the coated calamari to the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
Drain and Serve
Remove the fried calamari with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
